Homework Help Center

Brewster Cares Homework Help is a free program dedicated to helping children in grades 1st to 5th for whom English is not their first language.

With the introduction of distance learning, parents who cannot read or speak english struggle to help their children complete their assignments and children are falling behind in school.

Brewster Cares Homework Help Program is completely free, and it relies on the desire, capacity and skills that our own community have to help others in need. Our tutors are teachers, parents, grandparents, professional adults and high school students.

How It Works

How it Works:

Homework help takes place at 11 Eastview, Brewster NY and by appointment via Zoom. Students and tutors will be matched based on schedule and availability. Each session is 40 min, and it focuses on completing homework assignments. All materials are accessed by the student from their school blackboard accounts and the tutor supports the completion of the tasks. Due to COVID, screening questions will be asked, temperatures will be taken, masks are required to be worn and a limited number of students will be admitted to the study room at one time. Parents or caregivers must remain on campus during the sessions. Students and tutors do not meet alone in private rooms, they are socially distanced in pairs in a large room with monitors present.

WHO ARE OUR TUTORS

They are teachers, parents, grandparents, professional adults and specially trained high school students.

HOW DO I BECOME A TUTOR?

In order to join our team you must have a background check, complete safe spaces online training and have a personal interview. Once you complete enrollment, you will be assigned a time to come to the homework help center or assigned a student to connect with over zoom.

Commitment

As a tutor, we ask for a commitment of at least one hour per week based on your personal schedule between November and June. It does not have to be the same day/time each week. Our goal is to pair each tutor with the same student when possible. The application below offers potential dates and hours for you to select.

BENEFITS

If you are a high school student tutor you will gain certified community service hours, teaching experience (a plus if you are interested in teaching!), and 6 hours of professional and personal development as desired.

At the end of your contract you will receive a certificate from Brewster Cares, signed by your trainer and the program’s president. You will also receive a recommendation letter detailing your performance, character and the progress your students made.
